Crash the crazy Cavalry Dog walked an interesting path into his current path as the Oklahoma Cavalry mascot. After being born a stray in the Wichita Mountains of southwestern Oklahoma, as a pup he was taken on by some friendly soldiers from Fort Sill who found him during a training exercise. They took a liking to the little guy for his incessant energy and non-stop antics, and thus decided to keep him around as their units unofficial “mascot”. In addition to being entertaining, Crash developed a habit of crawling into their tanks and mechanized artillery pieces; they made great spots for his never ending dog naps during the day. One of these siestas however led to an unplanned deployment overseas with the unit when he snoozed off in a piece of equipment bound for Iraq. In the desert his antics made him somewhat of a liability in combat, as Crash’s hyperactivity no doubt didn’t help situational readiness. Once back stateside Crash got some great news…….word around Lawton was that a professional basketball team was coming to town and there just might be an opening in their mascot department. Historically US Cavalry units have kept dogs as their mascots since the early 1800’s, and fresh off his “deployment” Crash was ready for the new job. Now he spends his days around the community in Lawton and his nights at the Great Plains Coliseum entertaining the fans and keeping the spirit up at Oklahoma Cav’s games. Crash would love it if you’d come spend a night with him enjoying fun, friends and of course Oklahoma Cavalry Basketball!
